Were you SENT?
‘I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.’ (Jeremiah 23:21)
It is never enough to be gifted, or anointed. To be effective, the prophet must be SENT by God after having heard from Him. We may notice in this chapter of Jeremiah that God never disputes that these prophets prophesied.
However, God does say that they prophesied by Baal (v. 13), they committed adultery and walked in lies (v. 14), and their vision was from their own heart, and not from God (v.16).
In our time, many of us have been taught that the prophets can prophesy whenever they want, but the truth is that the prophet must be SENT. Otherwise there is the very real danger that the prophet’s words have a source of inspiration other than God.
In this particular chapter of Jeremiah, we see that the prophets encouraged those who refused to depart from sin, and today we see a very similar patter in how so often ministries insist that prophecy MUST always positive and encouraging.
